"Whose Utopia?" (2006)

RMB City (2007)

Cao Fei uses multimedia, such as film, photography and digital media to present the social and cultural transformation of Chinese in today's society.  Her works explore the Chinese internet culture and exploring the boundary between virtual and reality. In her video "Whose Utopia?"(2006), she presents the personal fantasies of a group of low education level's workers at a lighting factory. By the comparison between the industrial background and the worker's performance, the work questions our current reality and criticizes the rapid development in China. In "RMB City" (2007), Cao Fei spent several years to develop a virtual city in an online role-playing game called "Second Life", the city life is referenced by our social reality, which is overabundant symbols of a country's future (the slogans and architectural icons), it eventually turns into the cityscape as it appears in the image.

Zen for TV (1963) TV Clock (1963) Magnet TV (1965) His is influenced by Zen Buddhism and expressed it through electronic technology devices and performance art. His work reshaped or explained the meaning of Zen through digital devices, especially in the case of the television series. For instance, in the work Zen for TV (1963) , he reduced the TV image to the minimum, which turned it into a vertical line. In another work  Kuba TV (1963), he compressed and amplified the moving images on the TV according to the sound intensity. In Magnet TV (1965),   he placed a large magnet on television to distort and change the image and sound from a television. I consider this is the most influential piece and my favorite piece in the realm of art and modern technology. The works are the typical examples of human disturbance, and he is also known as the pioneer of Glitch Art. I feel that this kind of work is more effective than the artificial phot...

Arno Beck

O. T., handwritten typewriter drawing on Japan-paper, 31,5 x 31,5 cm, 2018 Textmode (Mountain), 2017 Installation View German Artist Arno Beck uses an old fashioned manual typewriter to do his works. The glitchy arithmetic digital images are combining by the typewriter's index of letters and symbols. The typewriter drawings present the transformation of digital imagery to a physical pictorial space through a typewriter. In the artist statement from his website, he claims that "I am driven by the search for an analog translation of digital imagery. I utilize this printing method as a means of producing paintings in a wider sense."  This is one of the ways to bring the digital image into the physical world. I am starting to consider to transform a physical object into a digital icon in my work (similar to Beck uses a digital cloud in his work). I also need to learn the way he presents his drawings, the frame and the allocation between each ...

Embroidery Notes

Zhou's embroidery work  Embroider (Verb) is defined as "Decorate (cloth) by sewing patterns on it with thread" (Oxford Dictionary) The origin of embroidery is unclear, one of the explanation is that in ancient times, people believed in nature provided the foundation of our growth, and we must respect all the things in nature. Therefore, our ancestors used the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, and the ferocious animals as clan totems, and tattooed on the body. When people began to have clothes made of textiles and fur, the tattoos were transformed into embroidery patterns on clothes to continue the tradition.  Another explanation is that the embroidery technique is derived from a functional perspective, it was invented to make the cloth firmer, more durable and beautiful. The embroidery technique has a history of at least four thousand years in China. The earliest written record was in the "Book of Documents", the word appears as a...
